AT&T's fabled research shop has a new parent called Lucent Technologies, a new boss, and promises that the job cuts that have plagued the physical sciences division are over. Many researchers had been bemoaning the demise of the labs, whose researchers count the development of the transistor, laser, and solar cell among a remarkable stream of breakthroughs that have garnered seven Nobel Prizes during the last 70 years. Yet despite encouraging news from the top, some staff are still sending out résumés.
