Boston--The Bible of lab animal care--the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals--came out with a new scriptural interpretation last week, unveiled at a conference in Boston. The revision, the first to the powerful guide since 1985, allows researchers to alter old standards for space allotments and cage construction to focus instead on enhancing animals' sense of ``well-being''--for example, housing playful animals such as cats and chimpanzees in multilevel cages with plenty to distract them. Researchers welcomed the changes, but many in the animal-welfare movement object, saying the new guidelines are subjective and difficult to enforce.
