President Clinton has asked for selected growth in science as part of his budget request for the 1997 fiscal year that begins on 1 October, including 4% increases for the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. But many of his proposals are expected to face serious opposition in Congress, which has yet to pass a 1996 budget for several agencies.
