Berkeley--University of California President Richard Atkinson came close to losing his job last week when he told the regents that the university would not be able to implement a new race- and gender-blind admissions policy until the fall of 1998. The regents had asked for it to be in place by fall 1997. In the end, Atkinson said he would have it ready by the spring of 1998, and the crisis ended.
