Prague--Charles University, one of Europe's oldest universities, is undergoing a transformation as it struggles to regain its place in international science. The university had become deeply divided into individual faculties, providing specialized education. In an attempt to link these factions, a new Postgraduate School in Biomedicine was formed 3 years ago with representatives of different faculties and academy institutes where students could earn Ph.D.s based on original research. One big problem remains, however: science's sinking attractiveness as a career.
