Cottbus--A new university of science and technology, the Technical University of Cottbus, established 5 years ago in this coal-mining region near the Polish border, is attempting to break out of the straitjacket of German university policy. Courses are multidisciplinary, students can get involved in projects focusing on the problems of the local region, and instruction is mostly by small group teaching--a far cry from the huge, overcrowded lectures common in other universities. If this educational experiment works, it could provide a model for other German universities.
