NewsResearchers at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory in Richland, Washington, have found bacteria in an aquifer 1500 meters below ground that appear to be living off hydrogen generated by a reaction between basalt and ground water. If so, they would be the first organisms known to obtain their energy from a source completely independent of the sun.
