MicroRNAs play a hitherto unsuspected, integral role in regulating gene expression. But their short length, sequence similarities, multiplicity of mRNA targets, and unpredictable pairing to those targets make studying them tricky. The good news: Methods for analyzing more familiar RNA species have been adapted for investigation of these extraordinary molecules and improved technologies are constantly becoming available.
