2008 U.S. BUDGET:
Research Rises--and Falls--in the President's Spending Plan

On 5 February, President George W. Bush sent Congress a 2008 budget request for science that favors a handful of agencies supporting the physical sciences and puts the squeeze on most of the rest of the federal research establishment as part of an overall $2.9 trillion plan that clamps down on most civilian spending.
