The largest genomic analysis to date of avian influenza viruses--reported online this week in Science (www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/1121586)--hints that part of the H5N1 avian influenza strain's pathogenicity may be traced to the behavior of a protein working within the infected cells.
