W. Wade Adams and Ray H. Baughman

Richard Smalley (1943-2005) was a pioneer in chemistry and nanotechnology, sharing the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his co-discovery of the "buckyball" fullerene molecule. As Adams and Baughman discuss in their Retrospective, Smalley brought endless enthusiasm to his research and teaching. He played a key role in creating the National Nanotechnology initiative in 2003 and right up to the end of his life sought ways to use nanotechnology to help solve the energy crisis and in new approaches to medicine
