APOPTOSIS:
p53 and PUMA: A Deadly Duo

Karen H. Vousden

The p53 tumor suppressor protein exhibits a number of activities that contribute to the induction of apoptosis. In her Perspective, Vousden discusses a study by Chipak et al. That describes how the nuclear and cytoplasmic functions of p53 can be elegantly brought together into the same pathway. This explains why both might be needed for the efficient induction of cell death.
