Miniature Analytical Methods for Medical Diagnostics

David R. Walt

There is a growing trend to bring medical diagnostics closer to the patient. In his perspective, David Walt describes how advances in sensors as well as developments in micro and nanotechnologies are enabling the development of miniature diagnostic platforms. These platforms contain all the necessary functions to perform sample processing and analysis. As the systems become simpler and less expensive they will be used closer to the patient and eventually are likely to be used at home for health care and health monitoring.
