AMERICAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION MEETING:
A Lively Core Turns Mercury Into an Enormous Electromagnet

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA--More than 11,500 earth scientists from around the world gathered 13 to 17 December at the fall American Geophysical Union meeting. Two groups of researchers built a strong case that Mercury generates its magnetic field in a lingering remnant of a molten core, much the way Earth's geodynamo operates.
