It is widely accepted that biodiversity loss and poverty arelinked problems and that conservation and poverty reductionshould be tackled together. However, success with integratedstrategies is elusive. There is sharp debate about the socialimpacts of conservation programs and the success of community-basedapproaches to conservation. Clear conceptual frameworks areneeded if policies in these two areas are to be combined. Wereview the links between poverty alleviation and biodiversityconservation and present a conceptual typology of these relationships.
