Telomere Wedding Ends in Divorce

The separation of sister chromatids during mitosis depends on dissociation of proteins called cohesins, which hold the sister chromatids together, prompted by a protease called separase. In their Perspective, Azzalin and Lingner discuss new research (Dynek and Smith) revealing an additional type of cohesion between the ends of sister-chromatid telomeres that requires a separate enzyme called tankyrase 1 for separation during anaphase.
