Blocking Plasticity in the Visual Cortex

David Ferster

The developing mammalian visual cortex adapts to visual stimuli at birth by reorganizing itself into ocular dominance columns. In his Perspective, Ferster discusses two new reports (Hensch and Stryker; Fagiolini et al.) that reveal the part played by GABAergic inhibitory interneurons in the establishment of ocular dominance columns in the visual cortex of cats and mice shortly after birth.
