TOKYO--The first documented case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in the United States has created a groundswell for a broader testing regimen. But many scientists say that testing all slaughtered cows, as is done in Japan, may not be the best way to ensure that U.S. beef is safe from mad cow disease.
