Polymers Get Organized

David G. Bucknall and Harry L. Anderson

Many polymers form disordered structures resembling tangled spaghetti, but recent advances in polymer synthesis have increasingly enabled researchers to control their molecular and supramolecular arrangements. In their Perspective, Bucknall and Anderson highlight some of these advances, focusing specifically on block copolymers (which consist of two or more linear polymers of different chemical composition joined end-to-end). Through controlling the polymer architecture, optical and other properties may also be manipulated, with many potential applications from solar cells to drug delivery.
