Policy Forum

EDUCATION:
The Long Road to Race-Blindness

Thomas J. Kane

In June of 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that universities could continue to consider applicants' race in admission decisions. In this Policy Forum, Thomas Kane discusses the empirical realities underlying the decision. He explains the difficulties of using race-neutral alternatives, such as family income or high school class rank, to maintain racial diversity on selective campuses. The author also identifies likely future challenges to race-conscious policies.
