The study of the persistence of metapopulations in ecological habitats has provided important insights into how fragmented and increasingly endangered populations should be managed and conserved. As Dobson explains in his Perspective, this endeavor is now helped by new work from Hastings, who extends the classic Levins' metapopulation model and provides an important adjustment in the current thinking about metapopulation persistence.
