IMMUNOLOGY: Hide and Seek in the Peptidome
Jonathan W. Yewdell
T cells of the adaptive immune system detect foreign pathogens by recognizing pathogen-derived peptides in a complex with MHC class I molecules presented on the surface of infected cells. In a Perspective, Yewdell discusses progress in understanding how cells generate peptides from cellular and viral proteins and the wily ways in which the Epstein Barr virus conceals its peptide products from the host immune system (Schwab et al., Yin et al.).
