PLANT SCIENCE:
Hexokinase, Jack-of-All-Trades

Wolf B. Frommer, Waltraud X. Schulze, Sylvie Lalonde

Certain enzymes have dual functions having both catalytic and signaling activities. To this group can now be added plant hexokinases, as Frommer and colleagues discuss in their Perspective. Elegant work with Arabidopsis mutants reveals that plant hexokinases not only phosphorylate glucose but also sense glucose levels and participate in the glucose signaling pathway.
