A novel enterprise at Harvard Medical School called the Laboratory for Drug Discovery in Neurodegeneration could provide a model for how to translate academic research into new drugs that industry is unlikely to pursue. Although its success is tied to developing commercially successful drugs, it is not tied to ever making a profit on those drugs--just enough money to keep the operation running.
