ASTRONOMY:
California Astronomers Eye 30-Meter Scope

Astronomers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the University of California (UC) hope to raise private money to build a telescope with a mirror 30 meters across. Caltech president David Baltimore announced a design study for the telescope 25 October, but Caltech and UC administrators haven't yet agreed on how best to proceed toward a venture that could cost $700 million over the next decade.
