Ultrahigh-energy neutrinos could give physicists valuable clues to the source of the cosmic rays that spawned them--one of the most vexing unknowns in modern astrophysics. Using data from sources such as a submarine-listening facility and an aging spy satellite, a handful of shoestring projects are quietly paving the way for higher profile efforts soon to come--and could well beat them to the punch.
