Role of Genotype in the Cycle of Violence in Maltreated Children
Avshalom Caspi,12Joseph McClay,1Terrie E. Moffitt,12*Jonathan Mill,1Judy Martin,3Ian W. Craig,1Alan Taylor,1Richie Poulton3
We studied a large sample of male children from birth to
adulthood to determine why some children who are maltreated growup to
develop antisocial behavior, whereas others do not. A functionalpolymorphism in the gene encoding the neurotransmitter-metabolizingenzyme monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) was found to moderate the
effectof maltreatment. Maltreated children with a genotype conferringhigh levels of MAOA expression were less likely to develop
antisocialproblems. These findings may partly explain why not all
victimsof maltreatment grow up to victimize others, and they provideepidemiological evidence that genotypes can moderate children'ssensitivity to environmental insults.
