Genome Centers Push for Polished Draft

COLD SPRING HARBOR, NEW YORK--The rough draft of the sequence of the human genome provided a tantalizing peek at what's to come. At the Genome Sequencing and Biology meeting held here earlier this month, it was announced that the genome centers are on track to produce a polished draft by spring 2003, but they still must devise clever ways to sequence portions of the genome that knocked computers to their knees. In a related story, researchers comparing drafts of the mouse and human sequences are uncovering a surprising architecture of the genome, causing them to discard earlier notions.
