'Destructionists' Fight to Keep a Dream Alive

An op-ed piece in the Baltimore Sun on 4 February castigating research on the smallpox virus was the latest flare-up in a long-running battle between destructionists--those who believe the last known stocks of the variola virus should be destroyed--and retentionists, who want to keep them around for study. Post-11 September, the retentionist philosophy is carrying the day.
