GENETICS:
McClintock at 100--Reason to Celebrate

A review by Susan R. Wessler

The Tangled Field Barbara McClintock's Search for the Patterns of Genetic Control
Nathaniel C. Comfort
Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 2001. 357 pp. $37.50, £25.95. ISBN 0-674-00456-6.

Comfort focuses on the development and context of McClintock's research. He argues that, contrary to current opinion, her work on transposition was both understood and appreciated, although her ideas on "controlling elements" failed to convince her colleagues.
The author is in the Departments of Botany and Genetics, University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602, USA. E-mail: sue{at}dogwood.botany.uga.edu
