Turning Gene Regulation on Its Head

Richard Losick and Abraham L. Sonenshein

Regulation of the trp operon in E. coli (which contains genes encoding enzymes that make the amino acid tryptophan) has been well worked out. The expression of the trp operon in other bacteria, such as B. subtilis, is less well understood. In a Perspective, Losick and Sonenshein describe new work (Valbuzzi and Yanofsky) that reveals the workings of the B. subtilis trp operon and the unique way in which this organism fine-tunes gene expression.
