MOZYR, BELARUS--Akira Sugenoya, a Japanese expert on autoimmune diseases of the thyroid, has spent most of the last 5 years here--a record no thyroid expert from outside the former Soviet Union has matched. His work with children with thyroid cancer has won him a reputation throughout the country, and last fall he became the third foreigner awarded the top medal in Belarus, the Skorina Prize.
