Sublimating Egos for a Common Goal

A few years ago, Robert Gallo, who heads the Institute of Human Virology in Baltimore, Maryland, mentioned his idea of a Manhattan Project for AIDS vaccine research to telecommunications entrepreneur John D. Evans. Evans thought the idea had some merit, especially if different institutions could collaborate through the latest Internet technology to form a "virtual lab." After months of discussions, Gallo and other leading AIDS scientists met late last year and agreed to start a unique vaccine effort, dubbed the Waterford Project.
