Lack of Replicative Senescence in Normal Rodent Glia
Nicole F. Mathon,Denise S. Malcolm,Marie C. Harrisingh,Lili Cheng,Alison C. Lloyd*
Replicative senescence is thought to be an intrinsic mechanism for
limiting the proliferative life-span of normal somaticcells. We show
here that rat Schwann cells can be expanded indefinitelyin culture
while maintaining checkpoints normally lost duringthe immortalization
process. These findings demonstrate that senescenceis not an
inevitable consequence of extended proliferation inculture.
