Enhanced: The Search for the Higgs Boson

In 2000, intriguing indications of the direct production of a Higgs boson were reported by CERN researchers. This particle is important because it is the manifestation of the energy field thought to endow most elementary particles with mass. In their Perspective, Riordan et al. discuss the experiments performed to date to catch a glimpse of this elusive particle and determine its mass. Future experiments will access even higher energies than today's particle accelerators and should finally settle the questions of its existence and mass.
