New Reaction Promises Nanotubes by the Kilo

One hundred times as strong as steel and able to conduct like either metals or semiconductors, carbon nanotubes could have numerous uses--if they could be made in sufficient quantities. At a meeting in Boston last week, researchers reported a new chemical process for making single-walled nanotubes, the most promising type, potentially by the kilogram. Because the process is akin to the way bulk plastics are made today, it has clear potential to be scaled up to make industrial quantities.
