SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY:
Science Stronghold Seeks the Big Prize
Richard Stone
REHOVOT--As a research powerhouse, and perhaps Israel's best known scientific institution, the Weizmann Institute has its own idiosyncratic way of doing science. Although it has 750 grad students, it is not a university and therefore is not obligated to cover every field. In fact, the institute picks and chooses carefully, building expertise in a particular area before moving on to something else, a tight focus which has paid off: Weizmann scientists claim honors ranging from the discovery of the p53 cancer gene to the development of new encryption techniques.
