Antidepressants have evolved through several generations since the 1950s, each a huge improvement over its predecessor--or so advocates have claimed. But a government-sponsored study published last month confirmed what other analyses had shown before: The fashionable antidepressants of the 1990s are no more effective than those of previous generations. The newer drugs do have a plus, however: fewer side effects.
