NEUROSCIENCE:
A Tale of Two Transmitters

Roger A. Nicoll and Robert C. Malenka

Dale's principle states that each neuron uses one and only one neurotransmitter at all of its synapses. In their commentary, Nicoll and Malenka recount how the truth of this axiom was seriously undermined when some neurons were discovered to use two neurotransmitters. They go on to describe a report by page Jonas et al. in this issue, which deals a further blow to Dale's principle by showing that two small molecule transmitters, glycine and GABA, can be released from the very same vesicle.
