Heavy News on Solar Neutrinos

TAKAYAMA, JAPAN--The same international conference that produced last week's startling evidence of mass in neutrinos from the atmosphere also provided hints that the same may be true for solar neutrinos. Both studies were done at Japan's 50,000-ton water-filled detector, called Super-Kamiokande, which is located in a mine 1 kilometer underground. A reported deviation in the expected number of neutrinos generated by the sun at certain energy levels suggests that solar neutrinos can also change their identity while in flight, a feat that would require these ephemeral subatomic particles to have at least a smidgen of mass.
