Young Physicists Despair of Tenured Jobs

New studies indicate that only a tiny fraction of new physics Ph.D.s can expect to move from a postdoc to plum faculty job. Because most of the new jobs for physicists have appeared in "nontraditional" areas such as engineering and finance, the American Physical Society is now boosting efforts to prepare new physicists for careers outside academia.
