GENOME SEQUENCING:
Microbial Genomes Come Tumbling In

In little more than 2 years, researchers have produced an "avalanche" of complete genome sequences, including those of roughly 10 bacteria plus the eukaryote yeast. And the avalanche is just beginning, for some 50 microbial genome projects are under way, with more in the planning stage. The sequences should provide a treasure trove of information for understanding bacterial function and evolution, as well as aiding pharmaceutical companies in their search for new antimicrobial medicines.
