IMMUNOLOGY:
Update: Antigen Presentation: A Balanced Diet

Michael Brenner and Steven Porcelli

CD1 molecules are distant cousins of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules; both are located on the cell surface, and MHC binds or "displays" foreign peptides so that the immune system can recognize and eliminate them. In their Perspective, Brenner and Porcelli discuss the crystal structure of CD1, reported by Zeng et al. in this issue. The new work shows how the structure of CD1 is specialized for presenting another class of antigens--lipids.
