Perspectives
In a report in this issue, Rossi et al. ( p. 1104) describe neurons in the visual cortex that likely mediate part of the phenomenon of "brightness induction." In his Perspective, Albright explains brightness induction, exploited by artists to increase the perceived range of light in a painting. The new work takes us closer toward understanding the basis of visual perception.
