The National Science Foundation is hoping to change the image of the research university as a place where scientists spend too much time in their labs and too little on the job of teaching with a $5 million offer to research-intensive universities to show federal legislators that they care about both missions. A recent workshop lured nearly 100 faculty members and administrators from more than 60 of the nation's top universities to Washington, D.C., on very short notice to learn more about the new Recognition Awards for the Integration of Research and Education. Preliminary applications are due by 5 July.
