La Jolla, California--A new institute focused on the hot topic of cell signaling is being launched in La Jolla. It has two major assets: It will be headed by famed molecular biologist Sydney Brenner, and it will be funded by Philip Morris, the tobacco giant, to the tune of $15 million a year for 15 years. The institute will be entirely independent, and Brenner says the company will have no say in research decisions. Some critics, however, are charging that this source of support is unacceptable.
