Deamination of phenylalanyl-transfer RNA with nitrous acid yields the agr-hydroxyacyl analog, phenyllactyl-transfer RNA. When this is incubated in a protein-synthesizing system directed by polyuridylic acid, it yields an acid-precipitable, alkali-labile polyester of phenyllactic acid.
