One transverse and one mandibular muscle form the frontal scars on each valve in both the trachyleberines and hemicytherines. Bifurcation of the transverse muscle into anterior-posterior bundles (trachyleberine) and into dorsal-ventral bundles (hemicytherine) and mandibular muscle position account for the different frontal scar patterns observed.
