Immunity related p47 GTPases (IRG) play a role in defense againstintracellular pathogens. Here we found that the murine Irgm1(LRG-47) GTPase induced autophagy and generated large autolysosomalorganelles as a mechanism for elimination of intracellular Mycobacteriumtuberculosis. We also found a role for a human IRG protein inthe control of intracellular pathogens, and report that thehuman Irgm1 ortholog, IRGM, plays a role in autophagy and reductionof intracellular bacillary load.
