U-Pb zircon dates from volcanic ash beds within the DoushantuoFormation (China) bracket its deposition to between 635 and550 Ma. The base records termination of the global-scale Marinoanglaciation and is coeval with similar dated rocks from Namibiaindicating synchronous deglaciation. Carbon isotopic and sequence-stratigraphicdata imply that the spectacular animal fossils of the DoushantuoFormation are for the most part younger than 580 Ma. The uppermostDoushantuo Formation contains a pronounced negative carbonatecarbon isotopic excursion, which we interpret as a global eventat ca. 550 Ma.
